Types of Progressive Jackpot Slots
There are three main ways a progressive slot can be configured.
Standalone progressives are the simplest. They attach the jackpot to a single game at a single operator. Every qualifying wager on that slot contributes to the prize. This makes the pot grow more slowly, so the top prize is usually smaller.
Local or in-house networked progressives link the progressive prize pools across several slot games on a single operator's platform.
Wide-area, or networked, progressives build the biggest prize pools of all, because they link progressive slots across many casinos, often run by different operators but connected to the same network. The pool grows the fastest, and the prize can climb the highest, but hits arrive least often and a win is less likely for any one player.
How Jackpots Trigger, and What the Odds Mean
Many progressive slots have a trigger that can feel impossible to predict, especially if you're not familiar with the game's rules or paytable. Sometimes the trigger is a specific symbol combination on the reels. In other cases, a bonus feature offers a shot at the progressives, such as a prize wheel that lands on a jackpot or a pick-me ladder that lets you climb the steps to it.
