But whatever a slot's RTP, some games deliver that money in bigger bursts, with losing stretches in between, whereas others pay a little more often. That is what volatility tells you - not how much a slot pays, but how it spreads that payout, with varying gaps.
Volatility, sometimes called "variance", measures the spread of payouts around a game's RTP. The RTP is a long-run average - volatility is how far apart and how large the hits are along the way. Two slots may have the same RTP and still hit very differently in any given session.
How studios label volatility
Slots list volatility in the game info along with RTP. Terms vary between studios, but low, medium and high are the most common labels, and some games show a scale instead of a word. The paytable is another clue: very large top prizes usually come with longer dry spells.
Who these games suit
So why would a player choose fewer wins in exchange for higher individual payouts? It depends on the player's budget and how long they expect to play.
If your budget can absorb long losing stretches, high volatility slots fit that. They draw players who are chasing big wins and can sustain the bankroll swings. Volatility does not change the overall return; the difference is the frequency and size of the payouts.
