How Paylines Work
A payline is a set pattern of reel positions that the game awards a payout on. When matching symbols land on that exact pattern, usually starting from the leftmost reel, a payout is awarded. In slots with fixed or adjustable paylines, a win usually requires matching three or more of the same symbol on the same active payline, and only the paylines you activate count toward a win.
A slot's paylines can be adjustable or fixed. Adjustable paylines are the ones the player selects, while fixed paylines are built into the game. On payline slots the total bet is usually the line bet multiplied by the number of active lines.
How Ways to Win Work
A ways-to-win game pays on any matching symbols across consecutive reels, starting from the leftmost reel. The matching symbols do not need to be on a specific line for a win, as long as they span adjacent reels.
The math behind ways-to-win is simple. In a 5×3 grid, each of the five reels has three symbol positions, so the total number of ways is 3×3×3×3×3 = 243. With four positions on each of five reels it is 4×4×4×4×4 = 1,024. Ways-to-win counts are therefore the product of the symbol positions on each reel.
Ways-to-win slots usually don't have a selectable number of paylines; instead, the player wins on every possible adjacent-reels combination, and the stake is a single total bet covering all of them.
What the Difference Means in Play
The payout structure shifts how stakes and risk feel. With many ways to win, hits tend to come more often, but each one is often smaller. Adjustable paylines give more control over the total bet, but playing fewer lines also means fewer chances to land a win.
