What Other Bets Can I Make On Super Bowl LVII?
Several common Super Bowl and football wager types can be found at all of New Jersey’s books. The three most common wagers are point spread, moneyline, and totals. Let’s take a quick look at each.
Point Spread
Easily the most commonly found type of bet, and no doubt the format most familiar to the public.
Sportsbooks establish a point spread which is essentially a “handicap” to equalize the on-field performance of both teams.
In a recent Super Bowl, the New England Patriots were a 3.5-point favorite over the Los Angeles Rams. The sportsbook view is that the Patriots were 3.5 points better than the Rams.
In order to win this Super Bowl point-spread bet on the Patriots at -3.5 would be a winning bet only if the Patriots win the game by 4 or more points. Conversely, a bet on the Rams on the spread of +3.5 would be a winning ticket if the Rams won the game outright or lost the game by 3 points or less.
If the final point spread is a “whole number” i.e. 3 points, there is the chance that the final score could result in a “push,” which is neither a win nor a loss, and the bettor’s stake will be refunded.
Attached to each point-spread is the sportsbooks take-out or ‘juice.’ This will be posted like this “Patriots -3.5(-110)” with the -110 representing the “juice.” This means that you are not betting $100 on a point-spread to win $100. Rather your $100 wagered will result in a net win of approximately $90.91.

Moneyline
The moneyline wager is another common bet type. There is no beating or covering the spread on the moneyline. It’s all about who wins.
A three-digit number next to both teams denotes the moneyline. Numbers with a minus sign indicate a favored team, while a plus sign shows the underdog.
In the Super Bowl three years ago, the Patriots were -115 (bet $115 to win $100); Los Angeles +130 (bet $100 to win $130). A negative number tells bettors how much they would need to wager in order to make $100, and a positive number tells them how much they win on a $100 bet.
The process for setting NFL moneylines (and point spreads) is similar to all other pro and college sporting events. Essentially, the sportsbook will try to set a line that balances the dollars wagered on each side of the proposition so that they are basically equal, and the book has no principal risk.

Along with point spreads and moneylines, there is also wagering on the total combined points scored by both teams. Bettors have the option to select “over” or “under” the total.
Using the Patriots and Rams as an example, say the posted total for the game is 47.5. If you bet the over, any final score that adds up to 48 or more will make you a winner, and any score that is 47 or lower will cause you to lose.
A great appeal of making total points bet is that you can win no matter the quality or the outcome of the game. Whether it’s a 31-28 shootout or a 42-10 blowout a bet on the over still cashes.
Also, once the combined game points go over the total, you are a winner no matter what happens in the rest of the game. When you bet the under, you may have to sweat out the final minutes in case an unexpected score occurs that could drive the total points over.
Like point spreads, point totals will be adjusted if one side is seeing more action than the other and an over/under bet can result in a push if the total is set as a whole number. Also, as with point spreads, the totals bet is subject to a house percentage or “juice,” typically in the 5-10% range, posted as -105 or -110.
