2023 Masters betting basics

Betting on golf is a little different than most other sports. There are several different variations of how to place a wager. Most sportsbooks will have offerings before the tournament starts, before each round as well as during each round.

Masters futures bets

The most common way to bet on a golf tournament is by wagering on a golfer before the tournament begins with a futures bet. Typically, the odds are very favorable when betting futures because it is so difficult to pick out one winner in a large field like the Masters will have.

Even the majority of favorites will have odds hovering around +1000 or just below.

There are also different forms of a futures golf bet. Instead of picking the winner, some sportsbooks have odds available to wager whether a golfer will place in the top 5 or top 10 of the leaderboard.

Of course, the odds significantly reduce when widening the margin beyond winning.

Head-to-head straight bets on the Masters

The other most popular form of betting for the Masters is head-to-head straight wagering. In this style, a bettor will place action on which golfer he or she thinks will win a specific head-to-head matchup.

Often, these players will be paired up in the same playing group, but that’s not always the case.

Golfers with similar overall odds to win the tournament will be matched with one another and given odds of who will perform better. This bet can vary from just a daily wager that concludes after 18 holes, or for the duration of the tournament and all 72 holes.

Some sportsbooks will even expand upon a two-player matchup and place three golfers together.

Masters prop bets

Proposition bets are another fun way to get some action on the Masters. One of the most common prop bets among NJ sportsbooks is who will be leading after each round. Most books will have odds for the leader after 18, 36 and 54 holes.

Another prop that’s often listed is what the winning margin will be. Bettors can choose exactly how many strokes the champ will win the tournament by, or if it will be determined in a playoff.

There are a number of others, too. Some sportsbooks will allow you to bet on who will finish with the best score among past champions of the event.

Others will have even more interesting options such as which golfer from a certain nationality will finish with the best score. It might allow you to pick which English or Australian player will finish tops amongst his countrymen.

Masters in-play betting

There is in-play betting available at a number of NJ online sportsbooks as well. After each round of golf, there will be updated futures odds on who will win the tournament.

As far as placing a wager mid-round while the golfers are still on the course, there are several ways to do so. One is through betting the updated odds of a matchup.

Say you missed your favorite golfer’s tee time, but you still want to bet the matchup for that day’s round. Sportsbooks will give their customers updated odds on that specific pairing or threesome, depending on how the golfers have fared so far.

Other in-play options could include individual player props. These can range from exact hole results to betting on the over/under for how many birdies or bogeys a player has in a round.

Masters betting tips

Betting on the Masters and golf, in general, is fairly difficult. Unlike sports involving teams, it’s actually impossible to truly predict how one person will perform on any given day.

That being said, it can create a lot of added excitement to a golf tournament and allow gamblers actually to profit from seeing their favorite golfer perform well.

One of the most important factors to consider is how a golfer is playing as of late. Just because they’re famous and have won major tournaments before, it doesn’t mean they are going to be a lock again.

Do some research about the beginning part of the schedule and see how your golfer has done in the early stages of the season. If the golfer hasn’t broken the top 10 yet, he probably won’t at the Masters either.

Another aspect is the golfer’s history at that particular event or course. Of course, the Masters is held at the same venue every year, so that makes it easy when looking at previous results.

Inspect how your potential pick has done at prior Masters tournaments and determine if he has a real opportunity to win it this year. The golf course does not change very much from year to year, so past results should actually be a very good indicator.

Lastly, always consider taking a long shot. Although the key names in the field may typically fill up the top 20 of the leaderboard, it’s rare for a favorite to win golf tournaments.

Patrick Reed won the 2018 Masters with odds around +40000. You can pretty much guarantee a few under-the-radar players contend on Sunday every year, so if you have a small futures bet on the right guy, you could be looking at a pretty payday.

Be sure to shop around at all of the different NJ sportsbooks for the best price once you’ve figured out whom you’re going with. There’s no reason to leave money on the table and not use the sportsbook that’s providing you the friendliest odds for your golfer.
