Atlantic City Retail Casinos Set to Enter August at Peace, As All Workers Have New Contracts

All nine Atlantic City retail casinos averted strikes in July. That’s because 10,000 workers now have new contracts, with the final two casinos seeing a union contract ratification vote on Aug. 4.

Golden Nugget Atlantic City and Resorts Casino Hotel reached a tentative agreement with 1,000 workers who planned to strike on Saturday.

Their union, Unite Here Local 54, announced today:

The agreements at Resorts and Golden Nugget mirror those of the other seven casinos that were settled and ratified earlier this month, with substantial wage increases for tipped and nontipped workers, housekeeping workload standards, and job protections. All nine casinos in Atlantic City now have agreements in place with the union Local 54.

UPDATE: 08/04/2022

Union members ratified the contracts with Golden Nugget and Resorts today.

Unite Here Local 54 posted on Facebook:

The Resorts & Golden Nugget Ratification vote has resulted in a historic VICTORY with 99% voting YES to the new contract … All 9 casinos now have a new contract!

Golden Nugget, Resorts Agreement Not Yet Public

As with previous negotiations, the union isn’t yet making public what’s in the tentative contract agreements. Retail casino watchers will have to wait until the ratification vote.

Workers did say they wanted what 9,000 of their fellow union members already have.

On July 19 – when workers from Golden Nugget and Resorts, a Mohegan Sun property – voted to allow their union negotiating committee to authorize a strike without an agreement by Saturday, an employee voiced that sentiment.

Local 54 member J. Eger, a Golden Nugget bartender, said in that day’s union press release:

We just want what workers at the other casinos in the city are getting. We’re not asking for any more or any less than that.

On July 12, workers at the city’s seven other retail casinos ratified new contracts:

  • Bally’s Atlantic City Hotel and Casino
  • Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa
  • Caesars Atlantic City Resort and Casino
  • Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Atlantic City
  • Harrah’s Resort Atlantic City
  • Ocean Casino Resort
  • Tropicana Atlantic City

According to the union, the contracts called for:

  • “Substantial” wage increases for all classifications, including both tipped and non-tipped employees, retroactive to June 1.
  • Maintaining fully funded family healthcare and pensions, including language that protects jobs and increases work opportunities, and new technology protections.
  • Improvements to housekeeping workloads

Retail Casino Negotiations Didn’t Disrupt Online Casinos

The retail casino workers who’d been considering joining picket lines were housekeepers, bartenders, cocktail servers, cooks, bellmen, doormen, and other service workers.

New Jersey online casino gamblers didn’t notice a change.
