Not long from now, if the latest fluctuation in Daniel Jones Rookie of the Year futures becomes a trend, other candidates for the award may go from favorites to trying to keep up with Jones.
The first-year quarterback who made his first career NFL start on Sunday led the New York Giants to a 32-31 road win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
In so doing, he boosted the confidence for oddsmakers and fans alike about not only his team but his chances of being named the NFL’s top rookie.
The latest on Daniel Jones Rookie of the Year odds
Not only did Jones help the Giants to their first win of the season, but he did so in style, erasing an 18-point deficit. That created hype, and hype is what New Jersey sports betting thrives on.
Sportsbooks such as DraftKings NJ reacted quickly, upgrading Jones’ futures on awards like the Offensive Rookie of the Year.
The difference is drastic when compared to where he sat before the season began.
When the 2019-20 NFL season kicked off, Jones was +3300 on DraftKings to win the Rookie of the Year award. That line escalated to +1000 after the Giants named him their starter for Week 3.
After his 336-yard and two touchdown performance on Sunday, those odds skyrocketed to +200. Other books responded in kind.
FanDuel Sportsbook has Jones +260 on Tuesday, and PointsBet NJ has him +300 to be named the Rookie of the Year.
Books have upgraded his futures on other NFL bets as well.
Other Jones futures at New Jersey sportsbooks
Jones was a tremendous long shot, if listed at all, to lead the NFL in statistical categories relevant to his position a few weeks ago.
Books have changed their perspective since, however.
DraftKings, for example, now lists Jones in those future bets, although he’s still a longshot at this point. They include:
- +8000 to win the AP Most Valuable Player award
- +12,500 to lead the NFL in passing yards
Bets on Jones paying off obviously depend on his teammates’ performances. The potential loss of Saquon Barkley due to an ankle sprain detracts from that, as does the Dallas Cowboys’ 3-0 start.
Because of that, Giants futures haven’t gone the same direction as the odds on Jones adding to his trophy case.
NY Giants team futures unimproved so far
Before the season, PointsBet had the Giants +1500 to win the NFC East title. The same book now has them +1800.
PointsBet also had the Giants +5000 to win the NFC Championship this season. So far, that line remains unchanged.
FanDuel upgraded the Giants’ odds of winning Super Bowl LIV a little, however. They started out the season +8000 and currently sit at +7500.
If Jones can replicate his performance from this past Sunday, he would lead the Giants to a 14-2 record, throw for more than 4,700 yards and account for 28 touchdown passes.
It would be hard not to give him the 2019 Rookie of the Year award with such numbers.
As unlikely as it is that Jones will replicate his debut on a weekly basis, it’s a tremendous start for him nonetheless. If he is able to perpetuate the success, however, other Rookie of the Year candidates will have a hard time keeping up.
