To be fair, it’s the ending of the new PointsBet NJ commercial that might catch your attention.
Allen Iverson, legendary for his on-court crossover, appears in his latest PointsBet ad but instead of the crossover, he re-enacts another iconic move.
And let’s just say it’s a “step over” his previous commercials.
What’s in Iverson’s latest PointsBet commercial?
The television ad features Iverson at a random sports bar with friends.
He interacts with the crowd while using the PointsBet app on his phone to place in-game bets on the game they are watching.
Whichever game it is, the commercial doesn’t say. But it’s not a basketball game.
The commercial ends with Iverson recreating his iconic “step over,” reminiscent of the moment Iverson famously stepped over the Los Angeles Lakers’ Tyronn Lue in the 2001 NBA Finals.
The general attitude conveyed by Iverson and the rest of the people in the commercial is that of celebration. The message is clearly that betting on sporting events, especially with PointsBet, enhances the experience of watching a live game.
Case in point, Iverson shared the commercial on Twitter:
PointsBet has been active internationally for years but made its debut in NJ online sports betting in December 2018. It also launched in Iowa recently.
It’s one of the more well-known apps in the US, and that’s partially because of its ability to snag high-profile spokesmen like Iverson.
Iverson, Revis and the PointsBet roster
Iverson, of course, is not the only pro in PointsBet’s corner.
Another former professional athlete who is known to most contemporary sports fans has been on the PointsBet roster since the beginning. Darelle Revis, considered one of the greatest cornerbacks in the history of the NFL, is that man.
PointsBet brought Revis on not only as the advertising face of its sportsbook brand but as a business partner in November of 2018.
Since then, PointsBet NJ has continued to market itself with programs such as the Revis Betting Academy.
Iverson’s commercials debuted in October 2018 as a prep toward PointsBet’s impending entry into New Jersey.
PointsBet has The Answer
So why Iverson? Enlisting the aid of AI was a logical move for PointsBet. His resonance with the populace in New Jersey (and Pennsylvania) is unquestioned.
Iverson is arguably the best guard to ever play for the Philadelphia 76ers, as well as the best player at any position since Julius “Dr. J” Erving wore a “Phila” uniform.
He not only took the franchise to its first and only NBA Finals since the days of Dr. J but the style he did it with made him a legend.
Iverson and Revis are part of a small club of athletes to appear in promotional ads for sportsbooks.
Remember Charles Barkley’s “Dr. Aftkings” commercials for DraftKings Sportsbook?
